What is the difference between POP and SMTP mail?

There are two basic systems for mail delivery on the Internet - POP and SMTP.

The first system uses a mail client such as Microsoft's Outlook or Outlook Express to connect you directly to the Internet. This uses the POP mail system.

The other system requires that you have a mail server, such as Microsoft's Exchange Server. This can be configured to connect and collect your mail automatically. Furthermore it allows the orderly distribution of emails sent to a domain. This is the SMTP system.

If you have either received mail previously, and now it has stopped working, or you are setting up mail for the first time, you should contact Citipage Support, on (852) 2376 0169, explaining in as much detail as possible, when the mail stopped working.

Please have your username and/or domain name handy.

I cannot send or receive mail.

The most common symptom when not receiving mail, is an inability to connect to the Internet, either via your modem, ISDN card, or router.

As a first check, see if you can manually connect to the Internet, and browse to a site, or open a DOS prompt, and try and ping some name server in x.x.x.x format.
If you can't connect, then please call the appropriate support number:

Does Citipage support the ETRN mail command? (XTRN)

No. We do not support ETRN or any other form of mail-store ping response. The authentication that takes place when you dial in is all that is required to initiate the down load of mail, so long as your mail-client is set up correctly.

Can I forward mail?

If you have an existing POP3 mailbox with Citipage, and would like all mail sent from the one POP box to another, we can set that up for you. This will allow you to receive all mail from your new mailbox, (an example of which could be, when you upgrade to an SMTP mail server), without having to dial in to collect your mail manually from your old POP box.

What is a Mail Exchanger (MX) record?

Once a domain has been registered, it is very common to have a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) mail feed set up. For domain registration, see (Domains, What are the lead times for Domain Registration)

This is used when you have a mail server within your company, that will handle all internet mail, and re-route it to users on your network.
