How
do I view Statistics on my Website? If you have purchased Web Statistics
analysis package, you will be provided with Web Statistics reports. Unix
& NT These can be found at http://www.yourdomainname/wwwstat where
yourdominname is the Domain name of your webspace. Does
Citipage back up my Website Statistics? No. If you wish to keep a historical
record of your Website Statistics then you must download them at least once per
month as they are overwritten. It is necessary from time to time to overwrite
these files to conserve space. Does
Citipage keep a backup of my Website? Although all Citipage servers are
backed up daily on an advanced system, in general, no backups are made of user
data. All user data resides on a fully fault tolerant RAID disk system which is
configured such that if a component of the disk array fails, the array will continue
to function. You should however maintain a full and exact copy of your Website
that you would be able to upload in the event of catastrophic failure. I
am having difficulty with my Web Design. Who do I contact? Web design
is not a Support issue. If you are having difficulty with your web design, you
should contact us who can arrange the purchasing of Web Development for you.
What
are META Tags? META tags are a tool for helping a web site to get indexed
correctly by many of the major spider based search engines. They are a couple
of simple lines of code that go into the header of the HTML source document. Since
spider based search engines index web sites based upon what they find in the HTML
code of the site, META tags help to ensure that the visiting spider finds the
information you want it to. How do I use META Tags on my site?
The two tags that are the most important are the "description" tag and the
"keywords" tag. The description tag gives the search engine the description that
you want for your web site. Without this tag, search engines will usually take
the first text it finds from your site and make that the description. The keywords
tag tells the search engine exactly which keywords you want your site to be searchable
under. Without this tag, a search engine will choose words for your site to be
searchable under from the title and text of your site. It should be understood
that META tags are not a perfect solution for getting your site to the top of
search engine lists. They will help to get your site indexed correctly and they
increase the relevancy for the keywords you chose but they do not guarantee top
placement. Use the following format for your META Tags: <meta name="description"
content="text goes here to describe what your document is about"> <meta
name="keywords" content="put keywords or synonyms here, separated with a comma
and space"> How long should my META description tag be? You
should limit your META tag description to 20-25 words or about 150-200 characters
of text. Anything longer will be cut off in the middle of the sentence and will
look less professional. One thing to avoid with this tag is the temptation to
load the description tag with keywords for your site. This tag should be used
to provide a short but colorful description of your site that will entice searchers
to click on your link instead of your competitor if they come up next to each
other in the search results. Try to use only the keywords that you feel are the
most important in you description. What keywords should I use?
Choosing the keywords for your site is an important step. You should put yourself
into the shoes of your target audience and try to determine what keywords they
are likely to search use when looking for a site like yours. Also, be aware that
many words have more than one meaning. Here are more helpful tips to keep
in mind when making your keywords selection: - When choosing keywords it
is important to be specific. Usually, two-word and three-word phrases work better
than single words. Words like 'travel' or 'software' are very vague and will put
you in competition with hundreds of thousands (or millions) of other web sites
that deal with these topics.
- Don't overdo it with your keywords tag. The more
words you put into this tag, the more you dilute the relevancy for all of the
other words in the list. For better results, use different keywords for different
pages within your site. Try to use words that are relevant to the information
on that particular page and then submit each page to the search engines individually.
- Keep in mind that most of the search engines are CASE SENSITIVE. This means
that a search for "computers" will yield different results than "Computers". For
common words, it is best to keep everything in lower case since most people do
not even capitalize most proper nouns in their searches.
- Be careful with repetition.
Many search engines will give you a 'spam penalty' if you repeat a word or phrase
over and over. If there are words in the keyword list that you must repeat be
sure to spread them out a little bit.

do not appear when you try to look for them using the Search WebBot component. To
fix this problem go to the Tools menu and click on Recalculate Hyperlinks. This
will add the new pages to the Search Index. Uploading
to Unix If you are on Unix web space you should upload your files using
FTP. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is basically a tool used for transferring
and handling files across the Internet. Required Software You need
an Internet connection and FTP software. This software can be one of two main
types: - FTP Client software
This is a package specially
written to be an FTP client, examples on some common platforms are: Windows
- WS-FTP, CuteFTP Macintosh - Fetch These are all available for
download from http://www.tucows.com/ You should
use the following settings to upload your files to the Web server : Hostname
This should be the URL of your site - ie. If the URL you type in the browser to
get to your site is http://www.mysite.com.hk then you should use http://www.mysite.com.hk
as the hostname. Username This is the username that was confirmed
to you. Password This is the password that was confirmed
to you. Default Directory Leave this blank (*important*)
You can leave any other settings as they are. When you first access your
site using an ftp tool you will see a list of folders (directories) which we have
placed in your home directory. You will see folders (directories) called docs
and logs. You must always upload your files into the docs folder and you should
call your initial homepage (ie. The page that you want browsers to see first when
they go to your site) index.html. The docs directory is the place where all
of the files you want to access from your Web page should be stored. This directory
is linked to your top level directory in our Web space. This means that any html
file placed in docs appears on the web at the URL http://www.mysite.com.hk/myfile.html.
For example, if you upload a file called test.html into the docs folder it will
have the URL http://www.mysite.com.hk/test.html. If you make a sub-directory
in your docs directory called /more-docs and move test.html from docs into docs/more-docs,
it will have the URL http://www.mysite.com.hk/more-docs/test.html. In effect,
the directory name docs is invisibly removed from any URLs pointing to your site,
as that is where all documents accessed using a Web browser are located. - FTP
Command Line software
This is just a command line in a terminal session
or at a prompt invoked by typing the command "ftp", for example: Windows95
(with Dial Up Networking) - from the MS-DOS prompt DOS and other platforms
- in KA9Q-based software Networks (especially Unix) - from a terminal
session. Use the 'put' command in your ftp tool to upload the files into the
docs folder, check that the upload is progressing normally, and when the files
have been transferred, close the ftp session. Quit the ftp tool. Advanced
Options If you have bought a optional pack you can have full telnet shell
access. All cgi scripts should go in the cgi-bin directory of your web space.
Telnet
- Introduction
Telnet is the way you can access someone
else's computer, assuming they have given you permission. (Such a computer is
frequently called a host computer.) More technically, Telnet is a user command
and an underlying TCP/IP protocol for accessing remote computers. A Telnet
command request looks like this (the computer name is made-up): telnet the.libraryat.harvard.edu
The result of this request would be an invitation to log on with a userid and
a prompt for a password. If accepted, you would be logged on like any user who
used this computer every day. Telnet is most likely to be used by program developers
and anyone who has a need to use specific applications or data located at a particular
host computer. - Using telnet to connect to your Website
There are
plenty of good telnet clients available from http://tucows.Citipage.net such as
CRT and NetTerm which you can use to connect to your Website. The following
settings should be used : Hostname : This is the URL of your Website.
Username : The same username as your FTP username. Password :
The same password as your FTP password. - Commands that can be used within
your shell account
Here are a few commands you can use within your shell account
: ls List the files in a particular directory. Use on its' own for
a directory listing, use ls -l (the space is important) to view a full list including
the file size and permissions. pwd type pwd (Print Working Directory)
at any time to find out exactly where you are in your site. cd use
cd dir-name to move from the current directory down a level to a sub-directory,
use cd .. (that's space period period) to move up a directory level. cp
Copy files from one place to another. mv Move files and directories.
This command is useful for moving files within directories. You can also use this
command to rename files: mv oldname newname mkdir Create a new directory
within the current directory. rm Delete files or directories from
within the current directory. Note: the UNIX system does not permit deleted
files to be undeleted! Use rm with caution! chmod Change the permissions
on files. - Changing permissions on your files.
If you need to change
the access permissions on one of your files, use the chmod command. Once you have
uploaded your files to the appropriate directory, you should type chmod
755 <scriptname> This must be done for every file which you wish
to allow executable access to over the Web. If you want to restrict access
to a file (for example filename), issue the following command: chmod 0 filename
Note that this is a zero, not a capital 0. This command ensures that nobody,
including yourself, can access this file via the Web. - Removing files
To remove files use the rm command. Remember that no "undelete" command
is available! rm is called by typing in the command and the name of
the file to be deleted: rm file_name To remove a directory, including
all the files and directories in the directory, use the following variation: rm
-r directory_name Note that the -r option recursively deletes directories
stored below directory_name. If you issue it in your home area, it will
remove all your files. - Checking available space
To find out how
much web space you are using use the du (Disk Usage) command: du -sk docs
This will give you the number of 1Kb blocks that your pages occupy. Please
keep this within your payment limits; if you exceed your payment range you will
be billed for the extra space used.

version of PERL is running on the server? The current version of PERL
is version 5.004_04. Where
is SENDMAIL located on the server? On all of Citipage's UNIX servers,
SENDMAIL is located at: /usr/lib/sendmail. Why
do I get errors when using PERL? 404 File Not Found Here
are some possible causes of this error message : 500 Server Error Here are some possible causes of
this error message : - You do not have a cgi-bin. This could be because
you haven't purchased a optional pack. To purchase one contact us on (852) 2376
