How do I register a Domain? Contact Citipage

What
are the lead times for Domain Registration? There are two possible scenarios
for domain registration. One is for new Domains and the other for Domain transfers
from an ISP other than Citipage. In both cases, the procedure is very similar.
We need to have approval from a third party (e.g. Nominet), to say that they have
checked out the name, the company etc, and if all is well, we can then go ahead
and register the Domain. There are different time scales, depending on the
type of domain that you wish to register. These vary due to the research that
the approval authority needs to undertake, before approving the Domain Name. A
few examples are: .org.hk (1-1.5week) .com.hk (1-1.5week) .net.hk (1-1.5week)
.com (2-3 days) .net (2-3 days) .org (2-3 days) Once the Domain
has been registered with Citipage, there is a propagation process, whereby all
the Internet Name Servers are updated with the new information. A common request
with Domain Registration is to also have SMTP mail feeds set up. To achieve
this, one needs to wait for full Domain name propagation before setting up Mail
Exchanger (MX) Records. Other domain type may have different time scales, for
more information, contact us at: Tel: (852) 2376 0169 E-mail: sales@citipage.com.hk
How
long does it take for a Domain to Propagate? The time taken for a Domain
(international) to fully propagate is usually 24-48 hours. Within this period,
there may be some lost mail etc, as different ISP Name servers, refresh at different
times. What
is DNS? The domain name system (DNS) is the way that Internet Domain names
are located and translated into IP addresses. A Domain name is effectively an
easy-to remember name for an IP address. How
does DNS work? When you type a Domain name into a web browser, your web
browser asks a Name Server if it knows the associated IP for that Domain. The
Name Server locates the required IP and returns it to your browser. Your browser
then communicates with the appropriate IP. What
is a Name Server? A Name Server is a Internet Server that provides authoritative
answers for Domain Name Resolution into IP. What
happens if a Name Server goes down? There is invariably more than one
Name Server for each domain. These Name Servers are separate so if one fails,
the other will stay up. Of these, one will be a master, the Primary Name Server.
This holds the zone file (list of information) for the domain. There will also
be a number of Secondary Name Servers, who copy their information from the Primary.
If one machine goes down, there will always be at least one other that can provide
DNS resolution. To ensure that there is always a Name Server available, there
are nine root-servers across the world separated geographical. If these root-servers
also failed, DNS would stop working. Citipage customers have a variety of options
for running Name Severs. The preferred method is for Citipage to run both the
Primary and Secondary Name Servers. How

How
do I transfer my domain away from Citipage? You should send a fax to
us on headed paper confirming your request. For .com.hk / .org.hk / .net.hk domains
you will need to tell us the IPS Tag of the ISP you wish to transfer to. For .com
/ .org / .net domains the new ISP will need to submit a request to Internic in
order for us to transfer this domain away. Why
has my domain been put on hold? The most likely reasons are non-payment
of your bill and administrative errors. Internic charges $50 per year to cover
administration of each Domain. If you have paid, you must contact them to get
the error resolved and have your Domain re-instated. Do
I need to transfer my Domain to Citipage if I want to have Web Space hosted with
Citipage? No, although it is advisable. If there is a requirement to move
the IP address for your web space then this is more easily administered at one
ISP. Please note though that there are potential issues if you use your domain
for email that you need to be aware of. Please contact us to discuss any move
on: Tel: (852) 2376 0169 E-mail: sales@citipage.com.hk
Can
I have my Web Space elsewhere and my Domain at Citipage? Yes, although
again it is not advisable. If the other ISP changes the IP address of your web
space, your site will disappear from the Internet until we are informed of the
new IP address and propagation has taken place. |
